Nspiration for NVSBLE

When Warner Bros. asked us to make a birthday present for country sensation and vinyl junkie Hunter Hayes, we said YES! They sent us a copy of his hit single Invisible in clear vinyl, of course.

We immediately got down to developing an invisible Vinylize frame for Warner Bros. and began using a new adhesive which is clear. The crystal vinyl (a serato for the prototypes) was laminated to crystal cellulose acetate and then carved into a frame. The adhesive was later colored sand to lend the frames a vintage look. 

Clear vinyl is vinyl in its purest form. All other colours, including black, are added later. The main issue with clear vinyl is that any impurities are easy to see. As most records are 30% recycled vinyl, achieving consistent colours would be impossible - so it is easy to see why manufacturers “fade to black”. 

The name NVSBLE was coined to accentuate the removal of the letter "i" (which is why the letter "e" remains), "i" representing the self "I" or "eye". 

NVSBLE allowed us to introduce a more subtle look to our designs. The groove texture is present but the heaviness of the black is gone. The surface also appears more uniform. To maximize "face friendliness"  and comfort we cut the rims thinner and sculpted the temples.  

The sculpted temples had to reflect the quality of the frame front as well as improve the balance of the frame. The sandblasted wire core brings texture to the temples.

Gold hot foil stamping was chosen over silver because it accentuates the sand crystal hue.

Each of the 6 models (Ellison, Jack, Ralph, Ras, Rinehart, Tod) were named after characters in H.G. Wells' famous book published in 1897, "The Invisible Man".

Vinylize adds dates to Tour De France


Vinylize has developed into one of the elite touring acts in the optical world with over 40 venues only in 2016. Next shows will be in Metz, Strasbourg and Besancon. Rock you there!

In Tribute to Legendary David Bowie

Bowie left the ranks of the living at the age of 69 this January. A huge loss to the world of music and humanity.

In tribute to a legendary musician, Vinylize releases a box set crafted from the Blackstar album. In it is a handcrafted custom frame and case made from the original record. 
The inside of the eyewear box is adorned with the original sleeve.

The set also showcases the label which is a work of art unto itself. In this application it has been transformed into the trigger for a catapult which launches the eyeglass frame free.
Only 1 Blackstar set will be made and can be viewed starting May 9th during the Vinylize Tour de France.

VINYLIZE ASHBY won the 2016 Red Dot Design Award for product design. The classic round ASHBY features our durable Vinylize laminated construction. The temples are plated matt palladium. The acetate temple tips are secured with a screw and inlayed with a miniature silver vinyl record. Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen’s renowned accolade has been recognising outstanding international product design since 1955.

Vinylize hits up Detroit

The before last Vinylize trunk show is going down in Detroit. Optik Birmingham presents "OPTIK: Detroit" a month-long pop-up eyewear shop at 4215 Cass Avenue in Detroit's Midtown/Cass Corridor neighborhood, from April 1st - April 30th. Official kickoff Vinylize trunk show event is from 4 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 7th. 

Jack White's Lazaretto Remastered and Pink Floyd's High Hopes Remastered will also be shown.

Halfway through our USA tour, we are hitting up Seattle. Our collection will be available for viewing at all three Market Optical locations on March 25th and 26th.
Known to very few, the first Vinylize prototypes were made in Seattle nearly 16 years ago in a garage on Queen Anne hill.

Raise Your Glasses

Vinylize and Urban Optiks Optometry, San Diego’s premier source for eyecare and eyewear, have teamed up to make this year’s “Raise Your Glasses” fundraiser unforgettable. This is Urban Optiks’ second annual “Raise Your Glasses,” a Vendor Trunk Show Expo and Charitable Fundraiser, an evening of eye-popping fun, frames, and philanthropy. Vinylize is supporting the fundraiser by donating a limited edition box set from their Icons of the 20th Century collection. The Kiss Destroyer box set was released on the exact day of the auction 40 years ago (March 15th 1976). In it is a handcrafted custom frame and case made from the original record. 

The inside of the eyewear box is adorned with the original sleeve. The sunglasses and case are perfectly framed by the remains of original 1976 Destroyer album. 

On the front of the frame 4 tracks can be seen and never heard again: Detroit Rock City, King of the Night Time World, God of Thunder and Great Expectations. The set also showcases the label which is a work of art unto itself. In this application it has been transformed into the trigger for a catapult which launches the eyeglass frame free.

Only 3 Destroyer sets will be made. The first will be auctioned in San Diego on March 15th at Urban Optiks second annual signature event, “Raise Your Glasses".

Raise Awareness, Raise Funds and Raise Your Glasses one more time as award-winning Urban Optiks Optometry returns with its successful Vendor Trunk Show Expo and Charity Fundraising Event, “Raise Your Glasses” at Martinis Above Fourth | Table + Stage in San Diego on Tuesday, March 15 from 5:30pm-8:30pm.

Urban Optiks, named one of the Top 10 eyecare businesses in the United States in 2015 by INVISION Magazine, announced that Optometry Cares, which is administered by The American Optometric Association, is once again the beneficiary. Last year a silent auction and opportunity drawing raised over $7,000 for their programs. The 2015 celebration had over 150 attendees who participated in the event which showcased thirteen high-end frame and lens vendors in a mini trunk show experience. The evening provided a unique opportunity for attendees to see the ENTIRE frame collections from each of these vendors.

Trunk shows are usually held with one specific vendor in a single optometric practice, however Urban Optiks takes this experience to the next level by producing this event that brings a great number of vendors together in one place.

There will be thousands of frames to view, try on and purchase.
