Eyewear Reinvented with Bicycle Brake Cables
Vinylize is pushing the boundaries of design with the launch of our latest collection: CYKLO. This product line is a testament to our commitment to upcycling. In addition, it’s a nod to the timeless engineering of the bicycle brake cable, a concept first patented by George Larkin in 1902.
A Bold New Vision in Sustainable Eyewear
We craft the eyeglass temples from bicycle brake cables. This integration is more than just a design choice — it’s a celebration of sustainability and a tribute to the transformative power of innovation. The distinctive temple design is protected under intellectual property rights, ensuring that this bold concept remains uniquely Vinylize. A unique hinge has also been developed to hold the bowden cable.
The upcycling process is transformative, using discarded spare parts in fresh new applications. Brake bowdens are collected from bicycle shops. Most of them are indeed black, but many other colors and patterns are available. Much like we upcycle old vinyl records to make our eyewear frames, clipboards, lamp shades, mirrors, and more, we’re breathing new life into bicycle brake cables that would otherwise end up in the landfill.
The first CYKLO collection features three distinctive models named after key performers of Queen's 'I Want To Ride My Bicycle": Mercury, Deacon, and May. Each frame pairs Vinylize’s iconic upcycled vinyl frame fronts — known for their thick and durable aesthetic — with innovative cable temples. The resulting eyewear feels sturdy, offering unparalleled comfort and flexibility.
Each model is available in four striking colors: black, rust, blue, and green. These options provide versatility to suit a wide range of personal styles, making CYKLO a perfect fit for urban adventurers, cycling enthusiasts, and fashion-forward individuals.
